Remove excess self-adhesive vinyl
First, are they permanent? All of our printable self-adhesive vinyl can be used outdoors or indoors with an expected lifespan listed on the product description page. It is classified as permanent unless it is temporary wall art, sandblasted, or paint-masked stencil vinyl is for stencils only.
Can it be used in the dishwasher? – No, vinyl should not be put in the dishwasher and is not recommended due to unpredictable and variable heat, steam, salt, and chemicals.
Is it food-safe vinyl? - Vinyl can be used on the outside of glasses, mugs, etc., but should not be used in areas that come into direct contact with food...such as the serving surface of a plate or the inside of a mug. There are no industry vinyl safety tests specifically for food safety, for example, a fork or knife may scratch the vinyl on the plate, allowing it to potentially get into food, so we recommend using best practices in areas that do not come in direct contact with food or drink.
I recommend making small test cuts, especially when working with new materials, to make sure the cutting settings work well with the material you are working with before attempting to cut the entire design. You want the blade to cut cleanly through the self-adhesive vinyl and not through the backing. This is called a "kiss cut" and it will make weeding and dealing much easier in the next steps. If your test cut goes through the paper backing, you may need to decrease the thickness/depth, pressure, or blade set, or if the test cut does not go all the way through the vinyl, you may need to increase the thickness/depth pressure or blade setting. When you are happy with your cutting setup, load the cutting mat with self-adhesive vinyl into the machine and cut the design of your choice.
Clearing self-adhesive vinyl just means removing any excess vinyl from around your design that you don't want to be transferred to the final product.
If your cutting design is much smaller than the vinyl sheet you are cutting, then I recommend trimming off the excess self-adhesive vinyl before cutting. You can trim your design with just a pair of scissors. This allows you to use the rest of the vinyl sheet for another project.
To remove excess vinyl, you'll need some sort of tool. You can also use a contour hook, crochet hook, tweezers, craft knife, or even a straight needle. You poke the tool into the excess vinyl, lifting carefully to remove all unwanted wasted areas of the design. Your purge is complete when only the designs of your choice are left.
